Dear Mr. Khobzi, please tell us something about your professional career.

I am a newly appointed assistant professor at the Institute of Information Systems (IWI) at the University of Bern. I joined the Information Engineering team in May 2019 and honored to be serving the University of Bern. Before starting my job here, I was working on my PhD studies at the City University of Hong Kong. I have also spent several months at McGill University in Canada as a visiting PhD student. I have received my Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in my home country, Iran, where I have gained some years of industry experience as well.

What can you tell us about the courses you will be teaching?

I have offered a course for Bachelor students, which is called “Business Intelligence” and a course for Master students, which is called “Data Science for Business Applications.” Business intelligence and data science are two crucial areas for today’s business to leverage for success. That is why I want to teach my students the knowledge and skills that can be useful for them in their future careers. In “Business Intelligence,” the content covers areas from harnessing data resources to analyzing and visualizing the data, and finally, generating valuable insights that help firms with better decision making. While in “Data Science for Business Applications,” the content is more comprehensive and centered around conducting a data science project, using different techniques such as machine learning and learning how to conduct a data science project using Python programming language.

In both courses, students will have hands-on experience in analyzing data using state-of-the-art tools. However, for both of my courses no one needs to have a background regarding the content of the courses or the tools that will be introduced to them. Both courses are designed to train students regardless of pre-existing knowledge or experience. Therefore, the only thing they need is a passion for learning exciting new things. I encourage all students to contact me at any time if they have a question about my courses or research.

What does it mean to you to work for the University in Bern? Do you have a special connection?

It was a dream coming true! From the days when I was doing my Master's studies in Iran, I set this goal for my life to become a professor. I have been very passionate about teaching and research since then and I have worked with diligence to be where I am today.

When I was visiting the University of Bern back in 2018 I felt something special about this amazing university and of course, the beautiful city of Bern. Right then, I had a clearer image in my mind about what I want for my future. Today, I am grateful that I can call Switzerland my new home and serve the University of Bern.

Last question. Do you have something special in mind for your work in Bern?

Most importantly, conducting state-of-the-art research projects as well as preparing students for more career opportunities in the future and providing them with a high-quality learning experience they deserve, both in my lectures and in thesis supervision.
