Procedure

Process from planning to recognition of academic attainments:

The requirements and application processes vary depending on the exchange option. Regardless of which option students choose, they are required to complete a Learning Agreement in order to have the credits earned at other universities counted toward their degree.

In the Learning Agreement, you list all the courses you would like to complete during your stay. In cooperation with the Department of Business Administration, it is agreed which credits can be transferred. When selecting external courses, the following points must be taken into account:

  • Students are responsible for finding suitable courses at the host university that can be credited toward their degree program. Helpful information can be found on the websites of the respective host universities or by contacting the International Office of the respective host universities directly.
  • Only courses related to business administration can be credited as part of a business administration degree (Exception: 9 ECTS credits for coursework taken outside the regular study electives in the Master’s in Business Administration). When choosing courses, therefore, please ensure that you only select courses that are sufficiently related to business administration.
  • Language courses cannot be credited.
  • A maximum of 30 ECTS credits earned at another university can be transferred toward a Bachelor's or Master's degree program.
  • In the minor study program, a maximum of 50% of the required ECTS credits can be earned externally.
  • Bachelor's students can only take Bachelor's courses at external universities, while Master's students can only take Master's courses.
  • Only Bachelor's courses can be credited toward a Bachelor's degree program, and only Master's courses can be credited toward a Master's degree program. Credits from other levels cannot be transferred. The classification of a course as a Bachelor's or Master's course is determined by the external university.
  • External courses are credited as equivalent to those offered in Bern, provided that the content of the courses is largely the same.
  • If a course completed at an external university is equivalent to a course at the University of Bern, this external course can only be credited if the corresponding course at the University of Bern has not already been completed.
  • If a course taken externally is to be explicitly recognized as equivalent to a course offered in Bern, students are required to have the equivalence confirmed in the Learning Agreement.

At the same time as submitting their personally signed Learning Agreement, students must submit the following documents to the Department of Business Administration:

  • Personal registration form
  • Course descriptions (excerpt from the course catalog or printout from the course website) including level confirmation
  • Any conversion scales for ECTS/grades
  • Current transcript of records

After returning, students must apply for credit for the academic attainments they have completed. To do so, the following documents must be submitted to the Department of Business Administration:

  • Completed form for crediting external courses
  • Copy of the transcript of records from the external university
  • If you have received a printed transcript of records, you must submit it directly to the WISO Dean's Office. However, you will usually receive your transcript of records in digital form. In this case, you must ensure that the external university sends the transcript of records directly by email to sabine.herren@unibe.ch.
